Gucci Scrap-less

Reducing the impacts from leather production

Gucci is innovating creative approaches and solutions that optimize efficiencies during the production and manufacturing of its collections. As a perfect example, Gucci Scrap-less is a lower impact programme that significantly reduces the footprint of our leather manufacturing, as compared to traditional methods. By simply cutting the leather hide to size before tanning, we are able to process only what we need for production, while reducing the amount of energy, water and chemicals required to treat the material. On the logistics side, this also reduces transport related greenhouse gas emissions from tanneries to factories.

We are continuing to extend the Gucci Scrap-less programme for our leather production with 8 tanneries participating in the programme in 2019, equalling approximately 9,040 tons of CO2 avoided over the two-year period since it launched. To break the benefits down even further: around 1,341,000 kW of energy was saved; 16 million litres of water and water effluents entering the waste stream were avoided; 104 tons of leather scraps were reduced; and 230 tons of chemicals, including 44 tons of chrome, were avoided.

Gucci Scrap-less savings in numbers
1,341,000 KW of energy reduced (2018 + 2019)
16 million litres of water and wastewater avoided (2018 + 2019)
230 tons of chemicals avoided (2018 + 2019)
104 tons of leather scraps saved (2018 + 2019)
